A Motorcycle Camping Adventure to Kosciuszko National Park
The rumble of my engine echoed through deserted mountain passes, the crisp air a welcome change from the city's swelter. My destination: Kosciuszko National Park, a crown jewel of the Australian Alps, beckoning with promises of mountain Peaks, winding roads, and starry nights under a vast, inky sky. Armed with a thirst for adventure and a trusty Triumph motorcycle loaded for camping, I embarked on a solo motorcycle adventure to conquer Kosciuszko.
The 3 day journey itself was a tapestry of ever-changing landscapes. Lush green valleys that gave way to dramatic switchbacks carved into the mountainsides. The air grew thinner, carrying the sweet scent of pine and eucalyptus. Every bend revealed a breathtaking vista, begging for a quick stop to capture the moment.
Reaching the park felt like entering another world. The iconic jagged peaks of the Main Range pierced the crystal-clear sky.
I found my campsite for the first night at a location called ‘Three Mile Dam Campground’, nestled amongst towering snow gums, the perfect basecamp for the first evening under the stars.
Come nightfall, the scene transformed into a spectacle of a million stars splashed across the inky canvas of the night sky. The campfire crackled merrily, casting flickering shadows on the surrounding trees. The solitude was both peaceful and empowering, a chance to truly connect with the raw beauty of the mountains.
Upon waking the next morning and watching the sun rise over the fog covered mountains, after a coffee and some breakfast I headed back along the windy mountain passes, stopping in Cooma and then heading down the mountain past Thredbo Village and to my next campground which is nestled on the Swampy Plains River, called ‘Geehi Flats Campground’.
Kosciuszko National Park on a motorcycle was an experience unlike any other. It was a journey of pushing boundaries, both physical and mental, of revealing in the freedom of the open road and the tranquillity of nature. As I reluctantly turned the bike homeward, a deep sense of satisfaction filled me. The miles may have been etched onto the odometer, but the memories of this adventure were forever etched in my soul.
